Have You Lost Faith in Microsoft?

by Dave on March 30, 2009

Windows 7 RC1 will be released soon, and this generally means the Ready To Manufacture version will not be far behind. As people are still abandoning the Microsoft boat and diving into the vast, sparkling sea called Apple, I have to wonder exactly when did people lose faith in Windows. For me, it happened in Windows 3.1 back in 1991. I played that stupid Gorillas game and could not defeat the other gorilla no matter how many bananas I threw. But I digress.

I will often talk to relatives or friends who ask me about “that Vista program,” and they say it as if it were dating their teenage daughter. I have to remind them that “that Vista program” was a transitional Operating System that got a bad rap, and it is perfectly safe for it to date their teenage daughter because it has built-in Parental Controls–among other valuable security features. They usually just stare at me with a blank look on their faces.

I then add that Windows 7 will be out soon and it promises to be much better than Vista. But people aren’t buying it. They are utterly convinced that Windows is Satan and if you use it, you will go to Hell. There really is no justification for this. Sure, people had problems making their printers work with Vista. Sure it’s slower than XP. But we went through all of this before with Windows ME. Then one glorious morning we woke up and XP was here.

I suppose only time will tell if Windows 7 is the XP we all want it to be. Until then, Microsoft should continue showing those commercials of the little girls plugging their digital cameras into their PC and emailing pictures of their little fishies to their parents. That’s just so cute. I will also keep an eye out for Gorillas 2, and if it ever does come out, I will be sure to master it and redeem myself.

If not, I’m buying a Mac.
