AGV has been offering a free antivirus for years. AVG Technologies, formally Grisoft, is making it harder and harder to find on their website. They DO still offer a free version, but they really are pushing their commercial-grade products. And why not, they’re a business and they want to make money.

Below are some comparisons between the three pachages. While the commercial products are good and relatively inexpensive compared to other brands, the protection they provide might seem like overkill for users who just want a reliable anti-virus.

AVG Internet Security offers Anti-virus, anti-spyware, anti-rootkit, anti-spam, firewall, safe downloads, safe instant messaging, safe search, safe surf and free tech support. At the time of this article, this package was $54.99.

AVG Anti-Virus has all of the above except anti-spam and the firewall. At the time of this post it costs $34.99.

AVG Anti-virus Free Edition only has anti-virus, anti-spyware and safe search. They consider it their basic package. But the anti-virus is really what people want. The rest might be considered too much for people who want to keep their anti-virus lightweight.
